BIOREMEDIATION

 Bioaugmentation
"Adding Heroes to Heal Mother Earth"

Nowadays in our own environment many polluted places has become an serious issue and eventually we need to do something about it. Bioremediation can help to recover this earth and it’s involve a natural process in it. There are lots of techniques we can use and one of them is bioaugmentation. Bioaugmentation  is a process of adding microorganism on the site. The purpose of adding more microorganism is to speed up the process of removing the pollutants, which is more effective. This process is also a friendly type towards the community. It was reportedly found by  George M. Robinson  in California, which by spending his time experimenting with dirty jars and microorganism. This process is commonly use in municipal wastewater treatment.

The heroes in saving the Earth's polluted soil and water refers to the process which requires adding microorganism to the process and which those microorganism is the purpose where there's still a clean side so defined as a hero. This process requires of adding the microorganism and  it works by increasing the active level of the microorganism themselves. The active level has to be in a good ratio to the pollutants which means it has to suppress the pollutants ratio. If it doesn't the process result is not efficient because there might be a leftover of the harmful components. But also keep in mind that the microorganism only can transform the  pollutants in a certain rate, meaning it can't handle all the pollutants in one place.

Benefits of Bioaugmentation

This process also have the benefits. First, it's not to noisy process which it doesn't interrupt the community. Second, the process reduced carbon footprints means it doesn't require a energy to waste in heating the reactor or the treatment environment or needed to apply high leveled pressure because it's all natural and all from the microorganism themselves. Third, it cost effective and it also enchant the microbial community. Other than benefits there's also some problems in this process. First, difficulties on delivering the substance and any other needed in the process. Second, there are factors that decrease  the number of exogenous microorganism after addition. The factors include the limited nutrients, predation by protozoa and any others.

Application

Bioaugmentation applications usually thought applied when bio-stimulation and bio-attenuation is failed. This process of bioaugmentation applies in soils with low detectable number of other microbes, it also include processes detrimental or toxic to microbes. But, for small scale area it is recommended for areas polluted with compounds and it requires a long adaptation time. Noted that this is also an effective strategy to clean up contaminants with heavy metals and radionuclides.

There are also some limited things in this techniques. Such as very high frequent mortality of the microbial strains. This is due to biotic or abiotic stress.  Limited dispersal on the strains and throughout the soil matrix. It also can be cause by many other factors such as cell adhesion to organic material in the soil. This leads to strongly limited distribution of the microbe through the soil.

Facts

Besides those explanation there's also some fun facts about bioaugmenation. Bioaugmentation took a year to process even more than a year. This technique didn't require a second treatment, so once the process applies it's going to finished with just one time treatment. Microorganism in this techniques can used both aerobic type and an-aerobic type of microorganism. The performance of the process is according to the contaminant type and concentration along with the effectiveness of the microbe population on the site. There's a lot more facts than just that.
